PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

​Exploring Careers through Music ™ is a new career education partnership between the Guam ACTE, the Guam Philharmonic Foundation, Incorporated and PBS Guam aimed at highlighting local professionals with often hidden musical talent, who continue their musical proficiency through active music making.
​
 
Through quarterly public talks and career expos, Exploring Careers through Music ™ aims to provide Guam’s youth the access to people and programs who can mentor Guam’s future generation into various career fields while encouraging continuous participation in music making. We carry the promise that Guam will be enriched with an even more vibrant intellectual and musical community in the future.

Dr. Shirley “Sam” Mabini-Young, Ph.D. 
Former Senator & Former Director, Guam Department of Labor 
Singer

​Dr. Sam Mabini has held many leadership positions in both the private and public sector. She has served as a former senator of the Guam Legislature and Director of the Department of Labor. Her passion for workforce development is rooted in the belief that all people of Guam can reach their career and life goals. From the age of 4, Sam took music lessons from her late mother and also from the Guam Academy of Music and Art. She credits music for providing her with many of the social and emotional skills necessary to succeed in the journey of life. Dr. Mabini is the current Executive Director for the Guam ACTE and President of Transort Guam, Inc.

Dr. Jerry Castro, M.D. 
Otolaryngologist 
Drummer

Dr. Jerry Castro is a proud CHamoru who was born and raised in Guam and was educated in our public schools. Since his middle school days at Agueda Johnston Middle School, Jerry has been drawn to the drums which he continued learning at George Washington High School. His love for music allowed him to be a member of the Guam Territorial Band and several other local pala-pala style bands. A proud Triton, Jerry graduated from the University of Guam with a BA in Biology and began his journey to a profession in the medical field. He is a proud US Navy veteran having served 21 years at various prominent posts in the US Navy and Marine Corps medical system culminating at the rank of Commander (O-5). Specializing in the area of otolaryngology (ENT surgeon), Dr. Castro now runs his own local practice - Guam ENT in Tamuning.

​Hailing from the Lone Star State, Hannah Sto Nino has been surrounded with music since she’s been a toddler. Since arriving to Guam in the middle of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Hannah has been blessed by the incredible musical opportunities Guam has already offered her in such a short time. In addition to playing the piano, Hannah also sings and plays the violin. While a student, she was involved in her school and university choirs and orchestras. She is a member and conducting fellow for the Tumon Bay Youth Orchestra and currently works as a medical laboratory technologist for the Guam Seventh Day Adventist Clinic.
