From July 5 to 9, 2024, Team Guam, USA comprised of the Guam Territorial Band - Official Band of Guam, USA (GTB) and the Tumon Bay Youth Orchestra (TBYO) became the first two ensembles from Guam to officially participate in the Summa Cum Laude International Music Festival which was held in Vienna, Austria.
The 2024 Summa Cum Laude International Music Festival hosted 37 orchestra, band and choir ensembles from 14 countries and included performances in several unique concert venues in Vienna, tours to famous museums and landmarks and music workshops at the University of Vienna. Learn more about the festival at sclfestival.org Musical activities on tour began in the city of Salzburg, Austria with rehearsals and tours of local historic landmarks including Mozart’s childhood home and famous scenes from The Sound of Music. On July 6, the GTB, led by Jessica Pangelinan - the ensemble's 9th (first CHamoru woman) music director in its 48 year legacy, made Guam history with their Austrian debut concert at MuTh concert hall - the home of the Vienna Boys Choir. The concert also included musical performances by the TBYO and the Orchestra Magister Harmoniae di Associazione Musica Insieme APS from Italy. On July 7, both groups performed at the Golden Hall of the Musikverein where TBYO performed as a competition ensemble and the GTB performed as a showcase celebration ensemble in front of fellow musicians, family members and a music jury panel. In the category of SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, the Tumon Bay Youth Orchestra took home 3rd place with EXCELLENCE among the youth orchestras worldwide. 2024 Summa Cum Laude International Music Festival - Vienna, Austria SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CATEGORY 1st Place - China - Hong Kong 2nd Place - Spain 3rd Place - Guam, USA 4th Place - China - Taiwan 5th Place - Australia On July 8, both ensembles participated in musical workshops led by Festival jury members at the University of Vienna and later performed at historic Prater Amusement Park. July 9 marked the final day of the festival where festival participants were treated to a yodelling class prior to the closing Gala awards concert and farewell dinner. The Guam Territorial Band, originally formed as a youth marching band to represent Guam at the Inaugural Parade for US President Jimmy Carter in January 1977, is Guam’s well decorated (internationally award-winning) community band who presents memorable band concerts locally and abroad. Membership into the Band is open to musicians of all ages - from middle school to senior citizen. Learn more about the GTB at www.guamband.org The Tumon Bay Youth Orchestra was formed In September 2018 by the Guam Philharmonic Foundation, Incorporated to provide the youth of Guam and Micronesia the opportunity to perform orchestral music which includes the masterworks of centuries past to the latest movie soundtracks. TBYO now consists of two orchestras: a non-auditioned orchestra for youth with at least one (1) year music ensemble experience and an auditioned group for youth with at least three (3) years music ensemble experience. In July 2019, both group represented Guam at the Australian International Music Festival and brought home double GOLD awards.
